Under each category there are also two classes of membership:

SUPPORT MEMBERSHIP

SUPPORT MEMBERSHIP is open to anyone. AND… it costs less than an Active Membership.

Support Members Can:

  • help transport rescued bats to our Vets and Carers
  • assist in creche activities including food preparation
  • assist with public exhibitions, displays and fund raiser events
  • attend educational workshops
  • receive regular bulletins
  • join our social gatherings

ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP

Active Members are additionally eligible to become Carers and/or Rescuers of bats, both Flying-foxes and microbats.

ELIGIBLE TO BECOME A CARER AND/OR RESCUER

An Active Membership costs slightly more than a Support Membership. This is to cover our mandatory Wildlife Permit and Liability Insurances.

These allow Active Members of Bat Rescue Inc. to legally care for and rescue bats.

An Active Member is thus also legislated to be 18 years or older.

NOTE: Being a Charity and volunteer-run organisation, all rescue and caring costs are generally met by Members out of personal monies. But where or when funds are available, Bat Rescue will always help subsidise these costs.

NEED FOR VACCINATION AGAINST ABLV (LYSSAVIRUS)

Commencement of rescue and/or caring activity by new Active Members is first subject to proof of full and adequate anti-rabies vaccination.  All carers and rescuers need to be adequately vaccinated against Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

A course of three vaccinations is given over a 21-28 day period. Vaccines cost between $90-$110 per injection depending on your health care provider.

Do you require any further information about vaccinations or how to go about starting a course? Then please contact our Membership Secretary

Bat Rescue Inc. is also required to keep full records on each Active Member’s course dates. These include regular mandated follow up serological titre levels as well.

Ensuring our members are kept safe and protected in their volunteer duties is our priority.

MANDATORY EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS

In addition, under our SEQ Group Permit (By-Law #8) all new Carers must attend certified training workshops.  These are conducted annually by Bat Rescue. They are usually held in the months of October/November.

ACCEPTANCE OF ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP

Acceptance for Active Membership is subject to nomination and endorsement by the Management Committee. This Committee reserves the right to accept or decline any application.

Confirmation of a new Active Membership is also subject to satisfactory completion of 12 months probation (By-Law #8).
