OUR BEAUTIFUL ‘BATTY’ ORPHANS
During birthing season (October-December), many orphaned flying-fox babies are rescued and come into care.
Their mothers may have been seriously injured or died due to many causes such as electrocution, barbed wire or fruit netting entanglement, car accident or domestic pet attacks.
FROM BABY TO JUVENILE BAT
A baby flying fox takes up to 10 weeks to be weaned off 4-5 milk feeds a day onto small pieces of fruit. Then it needs another 1-2 months spent in large flight aviaries with other juvenile bats learning what it is like to be part of a colony of other bats.
So it may be in care for at least 4-5 months before it can be assessed to see if it is ready and able to fly. Only if it passes its flight test can it be released back into the wild.
This long process can cost our volunteer carers more than $100 per baby for milk formula and fruit until release (around late Jan-Mar).
And that doesn’t include extra medications or trips to experienced Vets that may be required along each orphan’s journey.
ADOPTING A BABY
Adopting one of our orphans assists us to cover these costs. So when you participate in our Adopt A Bat Program, you know you are donating to a great cause!
And in return, you will receive:
- a personal Baby Profile
- a mid-season Progress Update
- and finally a Flight Wings Certificate when your baby is finally released!
How cool is that?…!!
Thank you so much for your time and all the effort you put into this. With appreciation and gratitude…
You went to so much effort that we had not expected. Cliff’s Profile Card is now a lovely keepsake in my office at work – much to the envy of my colleagues who all want to adopt now!
What a hoot! She LOVED it! Such an awesome surprise!
We can’t wait to hear that Henry hopefully makes it to Flight School and is able to be released back into the wild.
DONATIONS FOR ADOPTIONS
Donations from as little as $5 to $25 give you a share in our annually featured ‘syndicate’ baby.
But from $30 to $50 you can adopt a baby bat but choose the sex of your orphan if you wish.
And for donations $60 and over, you can even name your baby bat with a name of your choosing!
Add don’t forget, all Donations over $2.00 to Bat Rescue Inc. are tax deductible.
